Lincoln is a city located in Lincolnshire, which is a county, East of England; for most visitors Lincoln is known as a bypass during a trip to England but if one explores the colorful past and the variety of its culture, one will find many reasons to visit this wonderful city. You can consider a tour through the historic attractions in the city centre, which are linked one to another by a Heritage Trail.
The
history of Lincoln can be traced back to the
Iron Age (1st century BC) when a settlement established at the skirts of a large hill besides a deep pool: that's why the settlement was called Lindon that means
"the pool" in Celtic language. When Romans invaded the city, they founded a colony called Lindum (which is the word "Lindon" Latinized); the colony developed because of the accessibility from the sea, until the Vikings arrived and damaged the city.
During
Viking times the settlement developed again and became a trading centre; then two years after the Norman Conquest in 11th century, the city started the construction of a Castle to control the population. The construction of the
Lincoln Cathedral took place in the same century, but it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1185 and it was rebuilt after some time; the city suffered two civil wars, in which the city was sacked but it recovered in time.

In
1157, the area was recognized as a city through a charter, from that time forward, the city started to prosper and became one of the wealthiest towns in England until 14th century when the city started to decline due to the flooding and plagues.
Since
16th century the city experienced many changes, with the dissolution of the Monasteries, in which the network of patronage that was controlled by the bishop finished; and with the English Civil War between Royalist and Parliamentary forces, the situation of the city was of a poor condition after the end of the Civil War.
After the
Agricultural Revolution and the
Industrial Revolution that took place in the city, many companies arose and the city improved its economical situation. Nowadays you can admire some of the archaeological findings in a wide variety of interesting museums that are scattered through the entire city.
